Offering real life experiences is a goal of ours at J.R. Gerritts Middle School. We encourage our students to become life long learners and develop skills to help them take charge of their own learning and to create their own learning opportunities.
The Computer Applications Department at J.R. Gerritts Middle School is designed to prepare our students for the 21st Century. Students are engaging in technical applications more and more and we strive to make sure our students are ready.
We not only teach the technical abilities, but also the less concrete aspects. We teach our students how to critically think through a task, work in teams collaboratively and how to reach out to the global community using the technology readily available to us.

Podsafe Music

In class we are always looking for music that can be legally used in our videos. I learned something new today. The term for this music - music that can be legally used on the web and distributed to others is 'Podsafe Music'.
I found a listing of sites that provide podsafe music at the website learninginhand.com: Have fun listening!

Copyright Laws

Copyright Laws have been a hot topic of conversation in our classes this week. There are many videos and resources out on the web to help with this discussion, but following is a link to one that I thought was good. It is specifically talking to teachers - but the bit at the end regarding PowerPoint does a good job explaining why you can't use any song/image you want. Even if it is "just for a school project."

2008-09

Welcome back my Digital Natives! I hope you had a relaxing summer and are all set to begin the journey of collaborative learning with your peers. (And when I say peers, I don't mean just your JRG peers. I mean your global peers.) This year I hope to get you communicating with peers from all over the world.
One way we are going to begin is by accessing our Google Student E-mail Accounts. The address to the portal is also on the JRG website.
Here is a quick little video on how Google Docs work.

Already 3rd Quarter!

This is the first week of the 3rd quarter! Where has the time gone?
Here's what we did 2nd quarter:
Digital Video Editing the students created an awesome video highlighting each of the departments at JRG! They spent soo much time working on these. I can't wait to show them off. (A few groups have some changes to make - if that's you... please come in ASAP!)
Elements of Design!!! We worked sooo hard on the Yearbook this year. We still have work to go on this one, too, but I can't wait to see the final project! It's going to be great! What a yearbook staff!! This class also created some wonderful brochures and calendars! (Many gave their calendars as gifts!)
WebPage Design students worked hard all year on their websites. They learned how to create navigation bars, animations and banners. Some students also found how to add music and videos!
CompApp7 students began the quarter with an Internet Safety presentation by Officer Slotke. This accompanied their new e-mail accounts. The students learned the ins and outs of MS Excel as well as created an on-line portfolio using the Wisconsin Careers website.
